We have seen a national shift in education. Public education has moved from the core purpose of teaching children reading, writing and arithmetic to subject matter promoted by political agendas that children do not have a knowledge base, understanding nor the maturity level to analyze and expanded sexual content to an inappropriate level. Parents have rights and must advocate for their children. Nationally only a third of eighth graders are proficient in reading and math. Our schools need to get back to educating our children providing them with a strong foundational education which prepares them to pursue future goals and stop pushing political agendas.
Teachers are critical to the academic success of our students. There is a teacher shortage; teachers are leaving the profession. We have to address the "WHY".
Being out of the classroom due to Covid, all children suffered learning loss. Increasing in-person instruction is critical to accelerating learning. Instructional hours should be increased by increasing the number of school days, reducing testing and decreasing other time-consuming classroom activities that do not have a positive impact on classroom learning. Children have to have art and play however let's make sure instructional hours are prioritized and find ways to make learning fun.
I believe every child regardless of socio-economic status, race, capabilities or debilitating challenges deserves the opportunity to attend a strong public school that supports and challenges them to be the best they can be.
Linda Welborn is running for re-election for Guilford County Board of Education District 4 on Nov. 8th, 2022.
