Meet Larry McKinzie, A 26 year public school educator and community advocate.
My name is Larry McKinzie. I am a 26-year Educator in Houston ISD. I am a life-long resident of Houston, Texas and a product of Houston Independent School District and a Houston Federation of Teachers member. I am a member of Windsor Village United Methodist Church. I attended MacArthur Elementary, River Oaks Elementary, Lanier Middle School and Ross Sterling High School. I graduated from Ross Sterling High School (HISD) in 1986 and graduated from Prairie View A&M University in 1991.
At Prairie View A&M University, I became a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. in Spring 1988 and became a member of Prince Hall Affiliated Masons in August 1989. In 2007, I was the Precinct Chairperson for Precinct #180 and Democratic delegate for State Senate District 13. I support appropriate standardized testing, equitable educational resources, more vocational and CATE (Career and Technology Education) programs and more STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs. In my 26-year educational history, I have taught at Thomas MS, Sterling HS, Lawson MS (formerly Dowling MS), Cullen MS, Woodson MS, Ryan MS, Lamar HS, CEP, HSAA (High School Ahead Academy, Fonville MS and Secondary DAEP.
I have been on the Shared Decision-Making Committee of Cullen Middle School, Fonville Middle School and Secondary DAEP. I have been on the PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) of MacArthur Elementary, Cullen Middle School, Yates High School and Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy.
I began coaching baseball at Nelson (formerly Yellowstone) Park in 1992 and have coached baseball and been a board member for South Central Sportz Baseball Ball league based at Sunnyside Park. I am a former League President at East Bethel Cowboys (2010). I have coached sports at Cullen MS and Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy.
I have trained and mentored new teachers. I have aided principals and assistant principals in the application of cutting-edge curriculum. I have assisted Houston ISD trustees in campaigns to help students, teachers and communities. I have attended Houston ISD board meetings to insure accountability in the equitable application of Board policies and Houston ISD daily practices and procedures.
I work Behind the Scenes, In the Scenes, In Front of the Scenes, On Side of the Scenes, At The Bottom of the Scenes and On Top of the Scenes. “ I Am Already Working !”
