Challenger Christie Shirey is running as a Republican for Sussex County Council - District 1 in Laurel, Delaware. The election was held on September 10, 2024.
I decided to run because of my growing concern about Senior homelessness. Among the steps to help our low income seniors, many living on a income of less than $1000 a month, would include eliminating property taxes for this group. We must also take advantage of grants and programs offered to build senior housing.
But we also need to develop a proactive comprehensive plan that partners with towns, non-profits, organizations and the people who live here, to protect what we love about Western Sussex, while working to make our area affordable to those who already live here.
The plan must include:
Increasing the amount of housing for the people who already live and work in our area. Our nurses, police, fire, retail, teachers and our other workers that provide our needed services
The plan must work to insure infrastructure like roads, schools, and critical services are able to support new development and have a plan for future growth
We must preplan for land use to keep our small town feel while enticing businesses that will provide good paying jobs
Development is already heading our way. You have a choice to continue with the current plan, exhibited on the east side of Sussex, or try something new.
