Tom grewup here in Kirkland. He is married to Sally J. Otten and together they have two boys, Joseph, a West Point graduate and a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, and Robert, a computer science student at USC. Tom is an alumnus of Lakeview Elementary, Kirkland Junior High, and Lake Washington High School.

After graduating from the University of Washington he was hired by SeaFirst/Bank of America and worked in Washington, Oregon and, finally, San Francisco, CA. He returned to academia to earn his MBA at the Darden School at the University of Virginia.

Upon graduation it was off to Silicon Valley where he worked in finance and planning at Tandem Computers. He moved to Hong Kong with Tandem in 1990. Once there, his entrepreneurial spirit prompted him to found Pacific Coffee Company which he grew over 12 years before selling it. Shortly after the sale he was asked to assist the Head of School with a difficult financial and human resource transition at the Hong Kong International School. Once that was completed, Tom and Sally made the decision, after 17 years, to bring their two boys back to Kirkland.

Since returning, both Sally and Tom have been active in the community. Together they formed and grew the Kirkland Parks Foundation, helping to fund such projects as the Waverly Beach Picnic Shelter, the Learning Garden at McAuliffe Park, the Santa Mail Box, and sand for the Marina and Houghton beaches. Tom also recently completed 8 years on the Kirkland Transportation Commission. Two of those years he served as Chairman.

Tom is also on the board of Tilth Alliance (formerly Seattle Tilth).

In addition to his philanthropic interests, Tom enjoys soccer, tennis, sailing, hiking, reading, and helping young businesses with advice and engaging talent to create new products.
