Steve Rutherford

Steve Rutherford is a son of Gaston County, shaped by work, service, and story. A South Point High School graduate, he went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University, studied executive leadership at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, and pursued graduate work at HEC Paris. His education didn’t just happen in classrooms—it happened in lived experience, across borders, cultures, and communities. Steve is a 20-year U.S. Navy veteran who served mainly in the European theater, traveling to dozens of countries and earning distinction as one of the few enlisted sailors trusted to con a naval vessel during underway replenishment, leading a small team of sailors on special operations exploring the use of new technology in remote areas and other operations. That kind of responsibility doesn’t come from rank alone—it comes from judgment, calm under pressure, and accountability.
